You broke my heart so I wrote a song about it.
Men have infuriated and confused women since the beginning of time, and as a result, many female singers have used music to vent their frustrations. This has led to some of the most beautiful and arresting songs being created. Here are some of my favorite “I hate you…no wait I love you…Nah, I definitely hate you” sad love songs:
1) No Love – Erykah badu
I played the mess out of this song while dealing with one particularly infuriating and confusing young man. He really showed me no love, but I couldn’t seem to just walk away. It took something drastic happening before I finally had the sense to leave it alone.
2) What is Love – Vivian Green
This was my anthem for a while too. I was always dealing with someone who wasn’t on the same page as I was.
3) Green Eyes – Erykah Badu
I regard this as one of her best songs EVER. She captured the whole gamut of emotions a girl feels after she has broken up with her boyfriend and discovered that he has someone new. Who hasn’t been in this situation before? Plus the way the music in this song builds is amazing. You can really hear the anguish in Erykah’s voice. This is the kind of track you can listen to repeatedly and never get tired of.
(pardon the video. This was the only full version on Youtube)
4)Kitty Kat – Beyonce
This song is for that moment you realize that no matter how you wish he’ll change, he simply can’t or won’t. Then you play this song and get the courage to start walking.
5) It was You – Emily King
This song belongs in the same category as “Green Eyes” because of how deeply emotional and heartfelt the lyrics are. Emily King does an excellent song of placing the blame on her man. Yeah, 9 times out of 10, it is his fault. (lol). I don’t care how biased that sounds.

6) Apart – Brandy
I like this song too. Sometimes you have to just throw in the towel and say “Maybe we are better off apart”, because some guys are too scared to be honest.
7) The One I gave my Heart To – Aaliyah
This is my “self pity” song for those moments when you can’t believe he did you like that. RIP Aaliyah.
Don’t Explain – Nina Simone
I picked this song because you can hear the resignation in Nina’s voice. It is clear that the love of her life has done her dirty but she’s accepting it since she loves him so much. We’ve all done it at some point and turned a blind eye to his infidelities. I can’t see myself ever doing that. More power to you Nina.
9) Say my Name – Destiny’s Child
I liked this song because Beyonce calls her man out about cheating and dares him to say her name over the phone because she knows he’s with the other woman while he’s talking to her. And she kills it on the vocals!
10) Me, Myself and I – Beyonce
Played this one a thousand times and it always made me feel better. Made me want to hug myself after the mess I’d gone through. This is probably one of the best songs to play after extricating (or liberating) yourself from a bad situation. “After all the rain, you’ll see the sun come out again”.
Honorable Mention
Circles – Mariah Carey
The Love I’ve Never Had – Mary J Blige
Take him back – Monica
Don’t be Afraid – Faith Evans
No Good Man – Billie Holiday
I hate you so much right now – Kelis
Love Shoulda brought you Home – Toni Braxton
Just be a man About it – Toni Braxton
Not Gon’ Cry – Mary J Blige
Your Child – Mary J. Blige
I know I’ve forgotten a whole bunch but I’ll add them as I go along. Feel free to suggest some more angst-ridden, fed up, anthems.
